Process change driven by an end-to-end approach

The Challenge

As part of a wider needs analysis, Enviva identified the need to improve the investment appraisal process of one of its clients to bring it in line with the changing strategic requirements of the Group.

The Solution

After completing an initial high level analysis, Enviva adopted a five stage approach:

  • Process workshops were run with a cross section of managers to map out the ‘as-is’ process and identify issues with current practice for both the investment appraisal process and content of business cases
  • Enviva worked alongside an internal team during solution design which enabled the client to utilise our considerable experience and ensure that industry best practice was overlaid onto their existing systems and culture
  • Training workshops were run by Enviva consultants to galvanise and inspire managers to drive the process change through the business
  • Enviva prepared guidance notes and detailed checklists to further assist line managers when they are appraising new investment opportunities
  • Finally, Enviva produced tutor briefing notes and ran ‘train the trainer’ workshops to ensure there was an in-house training capability rolling forward

The Benefits

  • Investment decisions are now more rigorously prepared and assessed on a consistent basis allowing comparability of projects and prioritisation of investment spend
  • Benefits and costs of spend can now be more effectively tracked and measured
  • On going in-house capability ensures cost effective training and development of process
  • "I have worked with Enviva for several years and am continuously impressed by the effectiveness of their coaching assignments with our executive population, always being able to flex to the specific needs of the individual leader. Undoubtedly, Enviva has helped many of our senior leaders make more profitable business decisions, helping them become increasingly confident in the financial aspects of business performance and strategy."
