Cultivating a culture of commercial thinking

The Challenge

Our client had grown to a multi-site operation via a series of acquisitions as well as organic growth. Each unit was run as a separate business by individuals, many of whom had a non-financial background, so decisions were being made on an ‘operational’ basis with the commercial implications being largely ignored. Relatively low site profitability meant there were little funds for reinvestment in new equipment impacting on the ability to attract new or retain existing customers.

The Solution

Enviva delivered a series of interventions to develop managers across the business. Our approach included:

  • Development of both company and function specific material that allowed individuals to see the difference they could make in both their own department and as a business overall
  • Introduction of simple defined processes and appropriate templates to aid the initial application of material and continued development of techniques
  • Central senior management and support functions received ‘review’ training to ensure key messages carried throughout the organisation
  • Finance function specific training to create ‘super users’ – included coaching, presentation and communication skills to ensure messages conveyed appropriately
  • On-going support for hot-spots both for individual business units and designated ‘super users’

The Benefits

  • Enviva’s style of workshop delivery engendered immediate ‘buy in’ and momentum for the desired cultural step change
  • Consistent commercial decision making and focus across the business on real value added activities
  • Achievement of corporate growth targets and subsequent reinvestment in business unit infrastructure
  • "I have worked with Enviva for several years and am continuously impressed by the effectiveness of their coaching assignments with our executive population, always being able to flex to the specific needs of the individual leader. Undoubtedly, Enviva has helped many of our senior leaders make more profitable business decisions, helping them become increasingly confident in the financial aspects of business performance and strategy."
